How To Germinate Seeds
How to guide:
The beginning of every plant's life is often the most crucial, keeping a consistent environment is the most important part of germination, having warm temperatures and high humidity significantly improves the health of seedlings as rooting can occur much more quickly and efficiently.
Here we are germinating sweet basil seeds in jiffy pellets, jiffy pellets are one of the easiest ways to germinate seeds as they retain high levels of moisture and don't require a lot of maintenance. It is best practice to soak the jiffy pellets in plain water because seeds have little to no benefit from added nutrients. (This can be applied to any type of starting medium such as Coco, Stonewool, Eazyplug, Soil etc )
People in colder regions can make use heat mats for germination, heat mats can be really useful however they can also get quite hot (+30°c). We suggest using a heat mat controller for ultimate control. It is best practice to test your environment to see if it's too hot or cold before you germinate any seeds. Ideal temps can range depending on the crop, but a general guide is that most seeds will germinate at around 21°c.
Sometimes people have old seeds that struggle to germinate, hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic liquid that releases oxygen, using small amounts of this can significantly improve the rate and chance of germination. This works especially well with old seeds.
